Abie the Agent

This strip follows Abie, a streetwise character navigating urban commerce and small-time schemes. The three-tier layout uses sequential panels with speech balloons to establish character voice and plot progression—visual conventions that define newspaper comics. Abie the Agent ran as a daily strip in the early twentieth century, part of the boom of recurring character strips that transformed newspapers into serialized narrative spaces. The exaggerated linework and crowded compositions reflect the cartooning style of the 1910s Sunday pages, where artists developed the visual grammar—panel borders, expressive lettering, gesture—that would become foundational to comic books and sequential art.
