Abie the Agent

This Sunday comic strip follows Abie, a fast-talking salesman hawking the "1916 Complex"—an automobile designed to save customers $3,000 annually. Across four panels, Abie pitches the vehicle's fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs to skeptical buyers, employing rapid-fire sales patter and exaggerated gestures typical of early twentieth-century vaudeville humor. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary of newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring characters, and slapstick business. *Abie the Agent* ran daily and Sunday from 1914 onward, establishing a popular formula of ethnic humor and urban commerce that characterized the newspaper comics page during the medium's formative years.
