Abie the Agent

Abie the Agent follows a fast-talking Jewish salesman navigating New York business and domestic life. This eight-panel strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary of early newspaper comics: sequential panels, dialogue balloons, and recurring character types. The strip's rapid-fire gags rely on ethnic dialect humor and the contrast between Abie's commercial ambitions and his hapless execution. Published in the Sunday pages alongside dailies, such strips pioneered the panel-based narrative form that would define comic books. The artwork shows the simplified linework and expressive caricature typical of 1910s newspaper cartooning, where character design and gestural comedy carried jokes across multiple frames.
