Abie the Agent
This Sunday strip by Herschfeld follows Abie through a card game negotiation, employing the sequential panel structure and speech balloons that became standard in newspaper comics. The strip's humor derives from character interaction and wordplay across six panels, demonstrating how daily and Sunday pages developed visual storytelling conventions in the early twentieth century. Recurring characters in episodic scenarios—here a protagonist navigating social and financial circumstances—became the foundation of comic strip narrative. The dense composition and detailed linework reflect the technical demands of reproducing comics in newspaper columns, where artists refined the visual grammar that would influence comic book form.
