Abie the Agent

A daily comic strip following Abie, a hustling Jewish agent navigating show business and street life in New York. This panel sequence demonstrates the visual vocabulary of early newspaper comics: sequential panels, speech balloons anchoring rapid-fire dialogue, and recurring characters in urban settings. Abie the Agent ran as both dailies and Sunday pages, part of the wave of immigrant-centered humor strips that populated American newspapers in the 1910s–20s. The strip's verbal gags and sight comedy relied on readers' familiarity with vaudeville, tenement life, and ethnic dialect humor—standard fare for newspaper comics that predated the commercial comic book by two decades.
