Abie the Agent

A daily strip following Abie, a small-time New York operator navigating deals and schemes. The six panels trace a negotiation over a fifty-dollar bill: Abie pitches a con to a potential mark, encounters resistance, attempts persuasion through various angles, and ultimately settles the transaction. The strip employs the visual conventions now standard to comics—sequential panels with speech balloons, expressive caricature, and recurring character types. Abie the Agent ran in newspapers during the 1910s-20s, part of the daily comic strip's emergence as a mass medium. The format and visual shorthand established here—quick gags built on character and dialogue, economical panel layouts—became foundational to the newspaper comic and, subsequently, the comic book.
