Abie the Agent

This daily strip follows Abie, a tenement-dwelling character navigating urban commercial life. The narrative arc spans six panels, moving from Abie's complaint about his employer's unreasonable demands, through his bold decision to quit, to his eventual realization that independent work carries its own harsh lessons. The strip employs the standard grammar of early newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, a recurring protagonist, and humor derived from circumstance and dialogue. Abie the Agent ran as both a daily and Sunday feature, exemplifying how newspaper comics of the 1910s–1920s functioned as serialized narratives with working-class protagonists, contributing directly to the visual and narrative conventions that would shape the emerging comic book medium.
