The Adventures of Johnny Mouse
· 1913

This comic strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary that emerged in early newspaper comics. The six-panel sequence uses consistent framing, speech balloons, and a recurring protagonist—a mouse navigating encounters with a cat. The artist employs silent-film pacing: setup, escalation, and physical gag payoff across panels. Vertical composition emphasizes the cat's threatening presence above while the mouse operates in the lower frame space. Speech balloons carry minimal dialogue; much of the humor depends on sequential image and body language. Such strips, published daily and weekly in newspapers, established the formal language that would define comic books: panel borders, character consistency, and visual storytelling rhythms that readers learned to parse almost instinctively.
