The Adventures of Patsy—Lunch Is Launched
A three-panel newspaper strip featuring rapid-fire dialogue and slapstick action. Military officers discuss the propaganda value of a lunch with children; Scoop rushes in with camera equipment, disrupting the scene; and the final panel shows the chaotic result—a crowded public event where Patsy has cornered rats and gold on the coast. The strip exemplifies the visual conventions that defined early newspaper comics: sequential panels advancing a continuous narrative, expressive character drawings, and speech balloons driving both plot and humor. Such daily and Sunday strips were the direct precursors to the comic book format, establishing the language of panel layout, pacing, and recurring characters that became fundamental to the medium.
