Always Take Papa's Advice
· 1916

A four-panel Sunday comic by Wheelan following a father's misguided counsel to his son Oliver. The strip opens with papa forbidding his son from seeing Miss Sylvia Spotlight, a vaudeville performer. When Oliver attends her show anyway and invites her to tea, papa's warning backfires spectacularly—the young woman arrives at the family home and creates chaos, ultimately trapping Oliver in a bureau. The narrative unfolds through sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring family characters, and visual gags typical of early newspaper comics. By 1916, the Sunday page had become the primary vehicle for developing character-driven humor and domestic comedy, establishing conventions—panel borders, expressive linework, and narrative pacing—that would define twentieth-century comics.
