Aubrey of the Tenements
This six-panel Sunday strip follows Aubrey, a mischievous black cat, through his misadventures in a tenement apartment. Each panel isolates a gag—Aubrey tangles with laundry, disrupts a woman's housework, overturns basins and pans, and creates chaos that escalates across the sequence. The artist employs the visual vocabulary essential to early comics: sequential panels, speech balloons with dialect humor, and a recurring character whose pranks drive narrative momentum. Published during the newspaper comics boom that directly preceded the first bound comic books, strips like this established the medium's fundamental grammar and proved that serialized visual storytelling could sustain reader interest week after week.
