Believe It or Not by Ripley
Robert Ripley's *Believe It or Not* pioneered the newspaper odditorium—a single-panel format featuring curious facts, visual impossibilities, and remarkable phenomena. Launched in 1918, the strip became one of the most widely syndicated features in American journalism, appearing in hundreds of papers. Ripley's clean line work and spare compositions made complex subjects instantly readable. The strip's success demonstrated that newspaper comics need not rely on narrative sequence or recurring characters; instead, a compelling visual gag or startling claim could sustain reader interest across decades. *Believe It or Not* established the documentary curiosity cabinet as a viable comic form and influenced generations of puzzle, trivia, and novelty strips.
