Billy Bounce and his Chums Play Ping Pong with the Pieman
· 1902

This six-panel Sunday strip follows Billy Bounce and friends through a ping-pong game interrupted by a Pieman instructor. The narrative unfolds left to right, top to bottom, using sequential panels with speech balloons to advance the action and gags. The anthropomorphic animal characters—particularly the large rabbit—interact with human children in a domestic setting. The strip exemplifies early newspaper comic strip design: clear panel borders, simple line work, and sight gags dependent on visual flow rather than text. Published in the Sunday newspaper comics section, such strips helped establish the visual language—panel sequencing, character continuity, and dialogue placement—that would become foundational to the emerging comic book medium in the decades to follow.
