Binnacle Jim
This nautical strip follows the misadventures of sailors Jim and Bill, whose schemes aboard ship consistently unravel across six panels. The artist employs the sequential grammar emerging in early newspaper comics: speech balloons anchored to speakers, panel borders marking scene breaks, and recurring characters whose continuity depends on reader memory week to week. The drawings are economical but expressive, using bold blacks and crosshatching for texture. Each panel advances a gag through dialogue and action—a structural approach that became standard in the Sunday pages and dailies that birthed American comics. The strip's humor emerges from character interaction and escalating consequences, establishing patterns of comedic timing that would define the medium.
