Binnacle Jim Tells Why He Has No Trust in Diving Suits
This Sunday comic strip follows Binnacle Jim, a garrulous sailor character, as he recounts a series of misadventures involving diving equipment. Across six sequential panels, Jim narrates incidents of incompetence and injury—men struck on deck, near-drowning, and equipment failure—each episode punctuated by dialogue and captioned exposition. The strip demonstrates the visual conventions emerging in early 1900s newspaper comics: multiple panels arranged in grid formation, speech balloons carrying character voice, recurring cast of sailors and officers, and a narrative structure that builds through sequential image and text. Such Sunday pages were the direct precursor to comic books, establishing the panel-based grammar that would define the medium.
