Bobby Make-Believe

This Sunday strip follows Bobby, a young boy who negotiates with a neighborhood child for a ride on his tricycle, then imagines increasingly elaborate adventures—from displaying a collection of knives, to commanding a pirate crew, to riding a motorcycle and piloting a locomotive. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary of early newspaper comics: sequential panels, speech balloons, recurring characters, and escalating fantasy sequences that ground humor in childhood play. By 1915, such strips filled the colored Sunday pages of major papers, establishing narrative techniques and character development that would define the medium as it evolved into the comic book format.
