Bobby Make-Believe
This Sunday strip follows young Bobby through an imaginative adventure with adult companions. The narrative unfolds across nine panels using the visual conventions established by newspaper comics: sequential scenes connected by speech balloons and action lines. Bobby's bedtime fantasy—involving a rescue mission and seaside escape—exemplifies the child-centered humor popular in early twentieth-century strips. The consistent character design and panel grid structure show how newspaper comics had standardized the grammar of sequential art: recurring protagonists, predictable layout proportions, and dialogue-driven plotting. By 1916, Sunday strips had become essential features of American newspapers, driving circulation and establishing the visual and narrative templates that would define comic books for decades to come.
