Bobby Make-Believe

A Sunday newspaper comic strip following a child's Halloween imagination. Bobby encounters a succession of supernatural figures—mummies, witches, black cats, bats—each revealed through sequential panels as the narrative unfolds from left to right and top to bottom. The strip employs the visual conventions that became standard in early comics: distinct rectangular panels, speech balloons advancing dialogue and internal monologue, and a recurring protagonist whose expressions and body language carry the story. The half-tone artwork relies on bold blacks and careful cross-hatching for atmospheric effect. Such strips, distributed through syndication to hundreds of newspapers, established the visual grammar and narrative structure that would form the foundation of the American comic book when collected into pamphlet form in the 1930s.
