Bringing Up Father

Four daily panels follow Jiggs, the newly-rich Irish immigrant, as his wife Maggie demands thirty dollars for shopping; he pleads he has only ten. The strip then pivots to a street scene where a police officer catches a pickpocket who has lifted a ten-spot — and coolly releases him back into the crowd to steal the remainder. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* in a clean, confident line with expressive figures and tightly constructed speech balloons, launching the strip in 1913 for King Features Syndicate. The daily newspaper strip — alongside *Krazy Kat*, *Mutt and Jeff*, and *Little Nemo* — forged the sequential visual grammar that proto-comic-book editors would later simply cut, paste, and bind into the first comic books of the 1930s.
