Six panels follow the domestic sparring of Jiggs and Maggie: she sulks in silence while he frets, learns she has a headache, toothache, and rheumatism, confesses he thought she was angry at him — and the strip closes with Maggie hurling crockery while Jiggs ducks behind a barrel, the signature gag that made the strip famous. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, running in hundreds of papers worldwide. His clean line, elegant Art Nouveau interiors, and expressive balloon lettering helped standardize the visual grammar — sequential panels, integrated speech balloons, recurring cast — that newspaper syndicates then packaged into the first reprint comic books of the 1930s.
