Bringing Up Father

Six panels track Jiggs's familiar predicament: caught sneaking a cold pint home under his coat, only to have his wife Maggie pin a charity rose to his lapel — bursting the bottle and soaking them both. George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-running strips in syndication history. McManus's line work — art nouveau curves softened for newsprint, elegantly dressed women contrasted against Jiggs's checkered vulgarity — gave the daily comic strip a visual sophistication rare for its moment. Strips like this one, collected and reprinted as early as 1919, helped establish the reprint anthology as the direct ancestor of the comic book format.
