In this daily strip, the stout, tuxedo-clad Jiggs loses a bet to his friend Jerry, who wagers he can pick Jiggs out of a crowd. Found quickly among a cluster of identically dressed men, Jiggs grudgingly hands over two dollars — then, stung by Jerry's remark that it's a shame to take money from a club guest, wanders off and steals a fistful of pocket watches instead. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it for decades as one of the most widely syndicated strips in the world. McManus's clean line work, his knack for physical comedy across tightly sequenced panels, and his consistent characters helped establish the daily newspaper strip as the direct ancestor of the comic book format.
