Bringing Up Father — "Father Didn't Recognize The Hat"

George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* ran from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-lived strips in American newspaper history. This four-panel daily follows the familiar domestic engine: Jiggs, the newly rich Irishman, buys a hat for his imperious wife Maggie, congratulating himself on his taste — only to discover, in the final panel, that Maggie has swapped it for something unrecognizable. McManus drew in an elegantly spare Art Nouveau line, his women tall and sinuous, his men rotund and expressive. The strip's recurring-character format, panel-to-panel cause-and-effect gag structure, and integrated speech balloons exemplify the visual grammar that Sunday newspaper pages established decades before the comic book existed as a physical object.
