Bringing Up Father

George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* ran daily and Sunday from 1913 until McManus's death in 1954, becoming one of the most widely syndicated strips in the world. This daily strip follows the recurring gag of Jiggs—newly wealthy Irish-American social climber—being dragged into polite society by his wife Maggie. Here, a woman instructs Jiggs to entertain the visiting Mr. Mack A. Roney; Jiggs instead gives the visitor a tour of his mansion, boasting about the servants' quarters until the visitor asks how many servants actually work for him—"about one third of them," Jiggs admits, getting knocked flat. McManus's clean Art Nouveau linework, expressive silhouettes, and brisk six-panel timing exemplify the daily strip format that gave rise to the comic book as a collected, portable medium.
