George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* follows Jiggs, a newly rich Irishman who escapes his socially ambitious wife Maggie to drink and play cards at Dinty Moore's. This full Sunday page tracks Jiggs slipping away from Maggie during a London visit — ducking through an art gallery, bribing a doorman, sneaking past a guard dog — before Maggie catches him at the Bruisers Club anyway. McManus draws in a confident Art Nouveau line: elegant women, hatched stonework, automobiles rendered with real affection. First syndicated in 1913, the strip ran until 1954, its twelve-panel Sunday pages establishing the recurring-cast serial comic as a commercial form — the direct ancestor of the comic book page.
