Bringing Up Father — January 31, 1925

George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, making Jiggs and Maggie two of the longest-running characters in American comics. In this four-panel daily, Maggie orders Jiggs to fire the new butler, who stumbled in at 2 a.m. — only for Jiggs to greet him warmly, recognizing a fellow reveler from the Waiters' Ball the night before. Jiggs pardons the man on the spot; Maggie's furious "WHAT??" closes the strip. McManus's clean brushwork, rounded figures, and choreographed panel rhythm exemplify the daily-strip grammar that directly fed the first comic-book reprints of the 1930s — proof that the newspaper page, not the pamphlet, invented the form.
