Bringing Up Father — 11 February 1925

George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and by 1925 it ran in hundreds of papers worldwide, making Jiggs and Maggie household names. This four-panel daily shows Jiggs buying opera tickets to reconcile wife Maggie and daughter Nora, only to learn their seats were already claimed by a Mr. Clef the night before. Undeterred, Maggie gets dressed — an enormous, elaborately ruffled gown — hails a taxi, and silences Jiggs's complaint with a flat "Shut up!" McManus's line work is fluid and assured: speech balloons integrate naturally into the panel composition, and the strip's visual rhythm accelerates from domestic dialogue to slapstick reveal. His work helped codify the recurring-cast daily strip as the dominant popular art form of the early twentieth century.
