Bringing Up Father — February 18, 1925

Four panels track Jiggs's domestic peace-making scheme: he boasts to a friend that he's "won Maggie over," then calls his daughter to fetch her mother — only to learn Maggie knows of his reconciliation and now refuses to speak to him. The strip closes with a shoe-hurling Maggie and Jiggs's cry of "Rats!!!" beneath a "Home Sweet Home" sign. McManus's line is fluid and assured, his figures round and expressive, his staging classically theatrical. Launched in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* was among the first strips syndicated internationally and helped codify the visual grammar — sequential panels, integrated speech balloons, recurring cast — that newspaper dailies exported directly into the first comic books of the 1930s.
