George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and by 1925 it ran in hundreds of papers worldwide, making Jiggs and Maggie among the most recognized fictional couples on earth. This four-panel daily shows Jiggs, in his undershirt, deciding to mow the lawn to prove he isn't lazy — only to be knocked flat by the reel mower, stars flying — then scolded by the formidable Maggie for appearing outdoors improperly dressed. McManus's line is elegant and economical: rounded figures, expressive eyes, and speech balloons that carry the entire comedic load. His draftsmanship, rooted in Art Nouveau curves, helped standardize the visual grammar — panel sequence, integrated lettering, recurring cast — that newspaper strips handed directly to the first comic books of the 1930s.
