George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* follows Jiggs, a newly wealthy Irish-American immigrant who would rather eat corned beef and cabbage than live the high life his social-climbing wife Maggie demands. In this four-panel daily, Jiggs shuffles home congratulating himself that his diet-and-walking regime is destroying his health — only to find no crackers and milk waiting, because the milkman skipped. Maggie, lounging in an armchair, dispatches him to walk a mile to the store. McManus's cross-hatched linework, expressive silhouettes, and fluidly lettered speech balloons exemplify the draftsmanship that made newspaper comic strips — syndicated daily pages running from the 1890s onward — the direct visual and commercial ancestor of the comic book format.
