Four panels follow Jiggs—the Irish-immigrant social climber created by George McManus in 1913—sitting alone in his new business office, lamenting that no one has visited except the janitor, then spotting his old street gang working a construction site next door. He hollers "Hey—Fellers," and the final panel finds him happily playing cards in the half-built building, earning a quarter. McManus's draftsmanship is precise and decorative, his speech balloons integrated cleanly into composed panels. *Bringing Up Father* ran as both a daily strip and Sunday page for King Features from 1913 into the 1950s, and strips exactly like this one—sequential panels, recurring cast, visual punchline—supplied the page layouts and narrative shorthand that early comic-book publishers simply cut, reprinted, and bound.
