Bringing Up Father — August 3, 1925

Four panels follow Jiggs's domestic squabble: his wife Maggie declares she is sick and tired of talking to him; he retorts she should be tired of *listening*; she threatens to call a friend so she can forget about fighting; Maggie then thunders that if he hadn't married her he'd still be working in a laundry — and Jiggs, hat tilted, simply walks off muttering he might as well go home. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and its rapid-fire balloon dialogue and locked-in character design helped standardize the daily comic strip's visual grammar. Syndicated nationwide, strips like this one fed directly into the reprint anthology pamphlets of the 1930s that became the first comic books.
