He slips away anyway, sneaks past a construction site, and reunites with his pal Clancy at what appears to be a bar or club, where a judge reveals the son has been sent away all summer. McManus draws with confident Art Deco line work—fashionable women in cloche hats, Jiggs in his eternal top hat and checked suit, speech balloons integrated cleanly into each panel. Launched in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* ran for nearly nine decades and was among the most widely syndicated strips in the world, helping standardize the daily comic strip format—sequential panels, recurring cast, compressed gag structure—that directly shaped the first comic books of the 1930s.
