Bringing Up Father — September 5, 1929

Four panels follow Jiggs, the social-climbing Irish-American millionaire, as he describes a woman in an outlandish bathing suit to a seated friend — "a scream, bo, it's a scream" — only to turn and find that woman standing directly behind him. His companion reveals he knew her identity "from his description." McManus draws in his signature art-nouveau line: ornate wallpaper-pattern swimwear, elegantly curved figures, and Jiggs's ever-present tuxedo and stogie. Launched in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* was among the first strips to earn global syndication, its recurring cast and sequential panel grammar helping establish conventions that daily newspaper comics handed wholesale to the first comic books of the 1930s.
