George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* ran daily and Sunday from 1913 until McManus's death in 1954, making it one of the longest continuous strips in American newspaper history. This four-panel daily follows the rotund, top-hatted Jiggs, who confesses to his doctor that his wife insists he take up golf despite his hatred of it. Fully kitted out, he lumbers onto the course only to encounter Mr. Bunker — a skeletal wreck who has played every day for twenty years — prompting Jiggs's rueful wish that the doctor could see him now. McManus's clean outlines, expressive balloon lettering, and locked-in recurring cast helped establish the visual conventions — panel grids, integrated speech balloons, punch-line final frames — that newspaper syndicates exported directly into the first comic books of the 1930s.
