George McManus's long-running daily strip follows Jiggs, the nouveau-riche Irish immigrant, and his social-climbing wife Maggie. In this three-panel gag, Jiggs reluctantly agrees to sing for hosts Mr. and Mrs. Harmony despite protesting he has no voice; a bystander drily notes that anyone dragooned into performing always arrives suspiciously ready with sheet music. Panel two shows Jiggs belting out 'Speak to Me with Thine Eyes' while listeners wince. The punchline lands in panel three: Mr. Harmony assures him never to claim he can't sing — they now know better. McManus's fluid Art Deco linework, expressive caricature, and confident speech-balloon placement exemplify the daily newspaper strip format that directly seeded the comic book: syndicated pages like this one, reproduced and staple-bound in the 1930s, gave the nascent medium its defining visual grammar.
