This Sunday page (dated 2/22/31 in the top corner) follows the eternal domestic standoff between Jiggs, the nouveau-riche Irish immigrant who longs for corned beef and poker with his old pals, and his socially ambitious wife Maggie. Here Jiggs promises to stay put, falls asleep on a construction beam, gets knocked cold by a swinging rivet bucket, and is carried off unconscious — leaving Maggie convinced he has run away. McManus's draftsmanship is exceptional: sinuous Art Nouveau linework, immaculate clothing detail, and a confident twelve-panel flow that demonstrates exactly the visual grammar — timed beats, speech balloons, recurring characters — that Sunday newspaper pages exported directly into the first comic books of the late 1930s.
