McManus's line is fluid and assured, his figures round and expressive, his gag rhythm built on the slow-burn callback. *Bringing Up Father* launched in 1913 and ran for decades, one of the longest-lived strips in syndication. McManus helped fix the conventions still in use: the four-panel sequence, punch-line final panel, and recurring cast whose social tensions—immigrant ambition, domestic sparring—drove endless invention. These daily strips, collected and reprinted, were the direct commercial seed of the comic book format.
