George McManus drew *Bringing Up Father* from 1913 until his death in 1954, making it one of the longest-running character strips in syndication history. McManus refined the visual shorthand — compact reaction shots, economical speech balloons, confident brushwork — that daily newspaper strips passed directly into the first comic books of the 1930s, which were simply reprinted strip pages refolded and stapled.
