Four panels follow the domestic combat of Jiggs and Maggie: she scolds him for ignoring the coronation coverage in the newspaper; he feigns agreement, then immediately asks her *exactly* when and where the coronation will be held; she orders him to call the paper's editor himself; the final panel shows him on the telephone doing just that — having absorbed nothing. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it continuously for decades. His ligne-claire draftsmanship, ornate Art Nouveau interiors, and expressive speech balloons made the strip a model of daily comic timing. Strips like this one — syndicated to hundreds of papers — supplied the page-layout conventions, recurring characters, and visual shorthand that early comic-book publishers directly reprinted and then imitated.
