Four panels follow Jiggs and Maggie aboard a departing ocean liner, bidding farewell to Hortense on the dock. A ship's officer offers to show them the "places of interest"; Jiggs, top hat askew, responds with the strip's perennial punchline: "Where's the bar?" George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and its clean art-nouveau linework — fluid figures, elegant architectural backgrounds, confident brushwork — ran for decades, syndicated worldwide. McManus inherited the newspaper-comic tradition pioneered by Outcault and Dirks: recurring characters, sequential panels, integrated speech balloons. Those syndicated daily strips, collected and reprinted in the 1930s–40s, were the direct physical and commercial ancestor of the comic book as a format.
