McManus's long-running daily strip follows the socially ambitious Maggie and her hapless husband Jiggs aboard what appears to be an ocean liner. Across four panels, Jiggs asks crew members increasingly basic questions — where to find the writing room, the chief engineer, the time — receiving only nautical jargon in reply: "Port side, in galley two, first hold" and "Eight bells." The gag lands in the final panel when his daughter reveals none of the crew speaks English and they may be on the wrong boat. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, and its clean ink line, expressive figures, and tight panel rhythm helped standardize the daily comic strip format that newspaper syndicates would package into the earliest reprint comic books of the 1930s.
