Four horizontal panels show Jiggs — the Irish immigrant made good, in top hat and spats — brushing off a fellow passenger's invitation to drinks aboard an ocean liner. Following Maggie's advice to avoid strangers, he strides past, only to pause when two other passengers remark that the man he snubbed is a distinguished gentleman. In the final panel Jiggs peers through a porthole, puzzled. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it until his death in 1954. Its clean brush line, expressive silhouettes, and brisk four-panel rhythm helped standardize the daily comic strip format that newspaper syndicates then packaged into the first comic books — essentially reprints of strips like this one — making McManus a direct ancestor of the medium.
