McManus's line work is precise and lively, his crowd scene packed with caricatured beachgoers. *Bringing Up Father*, launched in 1913 by George McManus for King Features Syndicate, ran for decades as one of the longest-lived strips in American newspapers. Those daily newspaper strips — with their recurring characters, sequential panels, and speech balloons — formed the direct template from which the first comic books were assembled, largely as reprints, in the early 1930s.
