George McManus's *Bringing Up Father* ran from 1913 to 2000, making it one of the longest-lived strips in American newspaper history. This daily strip follows Jiggs, a newly rich Irish-American, as he fumbles with his wife's new camera — pressing buttons at random, losing a part, and ending at a camera shop where the clerk delivers the punchline: his wife already called to say he broke it. McManus's draftsmanship is immediately recognizable — elegant Art Nouveau flourishes on wallpaper and clothing offset against broad slapstick body language. The strip exemplifies the daily comic form that syndicates like King Features industrialized into a mass medium, the same panel-and-balloon grammar that would migrate directly into the first comic books of the late 1930s.
