Four panels follow the domestic tension between the socially ambitious Maggie and her reluctant husband Jiggs. Here Maggie fumes over a snub by the wealthy Mr. Hatesemself, who has omitted them from his swanky dinner; Jiggs, characteristically unbothered, notes the man did them a favor by keeping them away from his last musicale. The final panel cuts to Jiggs directing his chauffeur James straight to the bank — it's payday, and he has a plan. McManus's draftsmanship is elegant: cross-hatched evening wear, expressive rubber-faced figures, and crisp speech balloons. Launched in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* was among the strips whose collected reprints — sold as cheap newsprint booklets — directly seeded what we now call the comic book.
