McManus's draftsmanship is elegant: crosshatched backgrounds, expressive silhouettes, and speech balloons that carry the whole comic rhythm. *Bringing Up Father*, syndicated from 1913, was among the first daily strips to reach global circulation, helping cement the recurring-character serial strip as the dominant form that would directly shape the comic-book anthology format of the late 1930s.
