Maggie, pearl-necklaced and imperious, announces the nurse's orders; the final panel reveals Jiggs has promptly faked a relapse to escape the household. McManus's line work is fluid Art Deco—decorative wallpaper, a lamp-post glimpsed through a door, expressive rubbery faces. Launched in 1913, *Bringing Up Father* ran for nearly a century and was among the first American strips syndicated worldwide, helping standardize the daily three- or four-panel format and the recurring-cast strip that directly seeded the comic-book anthology page.
