Four daily panels follow Jiggs scheming to slip away before his wife Maggie can stop him, only to return home and find she has invited the neighborhood children to dine with their niece Quietina. McManus draws Jiggs in his signature checked suit and battered top hat, Maggie towering and imperious in an evening gown, the children wide-eyed at table's edge. The gag pivots on Jiggs's thwarted escape: his aside monologue in panel two drives the joke. George McManus launched *Bringing Up Father* in 1913, running it for decades as one of King Features' flagship strips. Its recurring cast, sequential panel rhythm, and integrated speech balloons were building blocks the first comic-book editors would directly repackage when anthology comics emerged in the 1930s.
