The final panel lands on a question mark as Jiggs looks knowingly at the camera. McManus's line is fluid and confident, his characters broad-shouldered caricatures dressed in the checked and striped patterns he loved. *Bringing Up Father*, syndicated from 1913, was among the longest-running American strips and helped standardize the newspaper daily format — sequential panels, speech balloons, a recurring cast — that directly shaped the first comic books assembled from reprinted strips in the early 1930s.
